Frequently Asked Questions
We all have questions.... some are asked more frequently than others.... Here are some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ's) we receive.....
Q: What are the training requirements for a Volunteer Firefighter?
A: During probation, Volunteer Firefighters are required to successfully complete State certified NFPA Firefighter One and Hazardous Materials training, including both Awareness and Operation levels. After these segments of training are completed, Volunteer Firefighters attend weekly drills to maintain and increase proficiency.
Q: If I have prior Fire or EMS training, will it count toward the District training requirement?
A: The Training Division will examine each individual’s prior training records and evaluate them on a case by case basis. You will have to challenge or complete the District’s training course.
Q: How Does the training I receive at Keizer compare to that of other Fire Departments?
A: The training program at Keizer Fire District is accredited by the State of Oregon’s Department on Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). All training is recorded and filed for each member of the Fire District.
Q: What is the cost of required training?
A: Training is provided free of charge to all District Volunteers.
Q: Do Volunteers receive any compensation? A: Volunteers are awarded points based on their responses and the drills they attend. These points are used to determine a reimbursement that all Volunteers receive at the end of each quarter. Beginning with a Volunteer member’s fourth year with the Fire District, money is deposited in a retirement account on the member’s behalf, provided all participation requirements are met.
Q: Can I specialize in ambulance work only? A: It is the Fire District’s policy that all personnel are to be Firefighters. You may wish to be more heavily involved in EMS, however, all personnel are expected to continue training as Firefighters to remain proficient.
Q: How long is probation? A: The probation period is twelve months. During probation, you will be evaluated on your training performance, fire ground performance, and your temperament during emergencies. Volunteers can be dismissed at any time and there is no right of appeal.
Q: Is a physical exam required? A: Yes. Each Firefighter candidate approved for membership will receive a complete medical and physical evaluation to determine if the candidate can perform the essential functions of the position. This evaluation will be conducted at the District’s expense, and will be performed by a Licensed Physician who is by contract providing this service for the Fire District. Appointment as a Firefighter is contingent upon passing this physical.
Q: How do I become a Volunteer Firefighter? A: The Keizer Fire District accepts applications for volunteer through August 31 each year for a volunteer recruit class that begins in the fall. Applications are not held from previous years.
The Keizer Fire District has an application, testing, and interview process that it uses to select qualified individuals.
